Pop-up retail and rezoning application

Isabelle Dunlop designs

As we count down the days until the grand opening of the Rize pop-up retail space, I thought I would clarify what this initiative is all about.

Rize is offering local entrepreneurs the opportunity to set up shop in our “pop up” retail space at Kingsway and Broadway. It’s a high pedestrian traffic location, and it will give people with a small business the chance to showcase and sell their one-of-a-kind products.

As you may know, Rize has submitted a rezoning application to the City of Vancouver for this corner, where we would like to build housing and new retail in the Mount Pleasant community. Although both initiatives are happening at once, they are not directly related.

We have vacant space at this site and we developed this initiative to introduce new retailers to the community while providing opportunity for some young companies to generate exposure and experience. We think that this non traditional retail space will be a fun experience for the neighbourhood and the young entrepreneurs involved and, who knows, maybe we will find a future permanent retailer for the proposed new building!

This is a community blog and our goal is to provide an online platform to discuss and showcase local community and Rize Alliance related news and topics. We want to hear from you and encourage comments and suggestions here at any time.

I don’t get why some people who seem so ignorant to the facts, make it their life quest to slam the developer for opening up this space to a group of young entrepreneurs who have been given an opportunity to show the community their wears. Last night before grabbing a bite at Cascade Room my wife and I dropped in on the Popup store. Hamburger Disco (created by three Mt Pleasant dudes) was finally set up and ready to host their opening party. Lots of people were showing up. Isabelle Dunlop (also from Mt Pleasant) who has great fashion style and a beautiful line of knitted clothing, was just so excited about how well she has been doing since opening the store. I left the Popup $200 lighter. My wife had decided to buy one of Isabelle’s hand made creations.

[...] is in the coolest space ever that will of course be pulled down one day to make flats, but for now the developers are giving local entrepreneurs the chance to have a free shopfront for their goods. [...]
